Old ACA power transformer question

Old ACA power transformer question

Postby jjone » Mon Apr 23, 2018 8:33 am

today I received an old oct. 1980 Boss CE-2 with its original ACA-220 power supply.
The output voltage measures 17,46 Volts, as you can see in the pic above. In Italy the AC mains voltage is now around 230 Volts.
Can I risk damaging the pedal with a voltage of almost 18 Volts?

Edit:
Mystery solved (at least I think).
When I first measured the voltage, the multimeter had a low battery.
I put a new battery and now the ACA-220 scores 15,39 Volts.
So, even if it continues to be a rather high value, it should have returned to normal.

That's way too high in my opinion, even though you are measuring the unloaded voltage, which I believe should hover around 12V on an ACA. Those with more knowledge on the older adapters will chime in, but I'd wait for their opinions before sacrificing a CE-2 to find out it's too high.

Here's the note from the power supply sticky:
ACA power supplies give out 12VDC unregulated, which means the voltage can vary from perhaps 15VDC unloaded to 10V fully loaded. This is described as nominally 12VDC.

17VDC does seem a little high, but you will probably be fine.

My ACA-230 power supply that I use for my BF-1 gives out 14.2V unloaded. The label says "9V DC", as it does on jjone's ACA model (and not "12V DC"). 17V really seems higher than usual to me.

I wonder if the primary voltage of 230V on a transformer calibrated for 220, also increase the secondary.
Perhaps an ACA-230 (like Pepe) of current production would be more appropriate and safe for the pedals.

ACA power supplies voltage is usually all over the place. That's why the protection diode was in all ACA pedals
